Transosseous osteosynthesis in the treatment of victims with leg bone fractures

Abstract

An external fixator was used in combination with interfragmental compression of bone fragments with shape-memory effect tightening clamps in the treatment of 180 patients with shaft fractures (n = 111) and pseudoarthrosis (n = 69). Ring-shaped tightening clamps were applied for the encircling splintage of bone fragments in spiral, oblique, and comminuted fractures and for autograft fixation; S-shaped clamps were employed in transverse fractures and pseudoarthrosis.
One hundred and nine (98.2%) patients with fractures and 65 (94.2%) with pseudoarthrosis achieved union of bone fragments in the anatomically correct position and had good functional results after treatment.
