Ilizarov method in the treatment of a child with severe congenital fibular hemimelia

In this article, we analyzed the treatment of a child with severe congenital fibular hemimelia (aplasia) based on the clinical and radiological picture and according to modern criteria and evaluation scales (Lascombes classification, ASAMI scale and Gillette questionnaire). Due to the shortening of the affected limb by 10 cm, the child's family was offered only amputation at their domestic hospital. We performed surgical bilocal lengthening and correction of the deformities of the right tibia and foot using the Ilizarov apparatus. The criteria for evaluating the stage of tibial lengthening were the index of external osteosynthesis, the value of lengthening (cm, %) and the result according to the Lascombes classification and the ASAMI scale. The child's walking ability was investigated using the Gillette questionnaire. Functional outcome was assessed according to the ASAMI scale.In the long-term follow-up period, the result of our treatment was maintained and showed the high efficiency of our approach which should be considered as an option of treatment in similar cases.
